The year was 1979. I was at infants school and I was wearing a purple curtain, one of my mum’s dresses, and was carrying one a shoe box wrapped in purple crêpe paper, supposedly to represent Myrhh.

In 1979 I had 8 one week inport periods in Hawaii for my Oceanographic Survey Ship U.S.N.S. Dutton T-AGS 22. Also known as the Dirty D. I was a converted WWII Victory ship. It was a steam ship that burned bunker C oil and as a result, the outside of the ship was always coated in a layer of black fly ash. It was dingy inside also.
